It enables the tilt of the pelvis and the curvature of the lower spine.

Muscle anatomy stomach. The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. The muscle fibers merge at the midline surround the rectus abdominus and join on the other side at a point known as the linea alba. The muscles move the contents of the stomach around so vigorously that solid parts of the food are crushed and ground and mixed into a smooth food pulp.

This wide muscle helps to rotate the spine increases pressure within the abdomen needed for certain functions such as defecating and assists with breathing movements. Next to it on both sides of the body is the internal oblique. Working as a team these muscles contract to flex laterally bend and rotate the torso.

The abdominal muscles consist of three distinct layers residing within the abdominal wall and extend to the pubis iliac crest lower ribs and vertebral column. The inner mucous membrane lining has large folds that are visible to the naked eye. The stomach muscles contract periodically churning food to enhance digestion.

Acting together these muscles form a firm wall that protects the viscera and they help to maintain erect posture. Ridges of muscle tissue called rugae line the stomach.
