Hand Anatomy Joints

Each finger has two interphalangeal joints ips distal dip and proximal pip. Joints are cartilage surfaces that connect bones to each other.

The Anatomy Of The Hand Musculoskeletal Key

Collateral ligaments strong ligaments on either side of the finger and thumb joints which prevent sideways movement of the joint volar plate a ligament that connects the proximal phalanx to the middle phalanx on the palm side of the joint.

Hand anatomy joints. The mp joint is where the hand bone called the metacarpal meets the finger bones called the phalanges. The thumb has two knuckle joints. A boxers fracture is a common injury of this joint that can occur when a closed fist strikes a person or object.

Does that seem confusing. The small ringer middle and index fingers all have the same four joints. Mp joints are important for both power grip and pinch activities.

Other stabilizers in the hand include the joint capsules which are also made up of fibrous connective tissue that surround each of the joints. As there are many small bones and joints in the hand there are also many ligaments within the hand that help to keep the bones together and stabilize the hand. The largest joint of each finger lies between the finger and the hand.

This complex structure connects the entire hand to the radius and ulna facilitates the passage of tendons together with the above mentioned neurovascular structures from the forearm to the hand and permits us to exploit all its movements. The first ip joint between the proximal and intermediate phalanges is known as the proximal interphalageal joint pip joint. The intercarpal joints are synovial joints formed between the individual bones of the proximal row of the carpal bones between the individual bones of the distal row of carpal bones and between the proximal and distal rows the midcarpal joint.

This cartilage allows our bones to glide smoothly against one another allowing us painless movement. The joints of the hand and wrist are named for the bones which they connect. A single hand bone is called a phalanx.

It works like a hinge when you straighten your fingers and thumb. Important ligaments of the hand are. Those are flexion extension abduction and adduction of the hand.

Synovial membranes line the inner aspects of the joint capsules and produce synovial fluid to lubricate all the joints. The anatomy of the hand is incomplete without understanding the wrist. They are where the fingers move with respect to the hand.

Between the hand bones and first finger bones metacarpophalangeal joints hand finger joint there are two interphalangeal joints ip joints on each finger except for the thumb which has one. The thumb has only one ip joint. Between the proximal phalanges and the metacarpals are the knuckles or metacarpophalangeal mcp joints.

There are four joints in each finger totaling 20 joints in each hand. This first joint at the base of the finger is called the metacarpophalangeal joint mcp.
