The anvil shaped small bone is one of three ossicles in the middle ear. In ear bone the malleus or hammer the incus or anvil and the stapes or stirrup.
The Auditory Ossicles Human Anatomy
Together they form a short chain that crosses the middle ear and transmits vibrations caused by sound waves from the eardrum membrane to the liquid of the inner ear.

Incus anatomy. It is shaped like an anvil which is why the anvil is a widely used alternative name for the bone. Posterior ligament of incus attaches the short limb of the incus to the mastoid posterior wall of the tympanic cavity. Superior ligament of incus attaches the body of the incus to the tegmental wallroof of the tympanic cavity.
The incus is so called because of its resemblance to an anvil. The incus lays at the center of the ossicles connecting the malleus to the stapes. Incudes is the middle of the three ossicles articulating with the head of the malleus anteromedially forming the incudomalleolar joint and the stapes inferomedially forming the incudostapedial joint.
One of its surfaces called the head forms a joint with the malleus ossicle. Two ligaments suspend the incus in place. Its lenticular process lentiform nodule articulates with the capitulum of the stapes.
The incus or anvil is a bone in the middle ear. The incus receives vibrations from the malleus to which it is connected laterally and transmits these to the stapes medially. Anatomy the incus or anvil articulates with the posterior surface of the head of the malleus.
The bone has a few basic regions.
