Aortic valve anatomy. It functions as a one way valve. Includes noncoronary posterior semilunar right coronary semilunar and left coronary semilunar cusps. With each of the heart muscles contractions oxygenated blood exits the left ventricle through the aortic valve.
The pulmonary vein delivers oxygenated blood to the hearts left atrium. In most cases three flaps comprise the valve. It is the semilunar valve that allows blood to exit the left ventricle.
The valve has left right and posterior cusps the bases of which attach around the valve orifice to a fibrous ring or annulus forming part of the fibrous skeleton of the heart. The aortic valve annulus is a collagenous structure lying at the level of the junction of the aortic valve and the ventricular septum usually a semilunar crownlike structure demarcated by the hinges of the leaflets. When the left ventricle contracts the valve only allows blood to flow out of the left ventricle and into the aorta.
When the heart relaxes between contractions the aortic valve closes preventing blood in the aorta from returning to the left ventricle. The aortic valve is located between left ventricle and aorta. Then it passes through the mitral valve and into the left ventricle.
